Guga Arantes could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 14th minute of the match, but Gerard Murphy made a huge save. In the 16th minute of the match U21 Brazil got a corner. U21 United States's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Basílio Gomes ran over to the corner to take the kick. After taking down the ball on U21 Brazil's corner Basílio Gomes fired away a hard shot, but the defenders efficiently covered the most dangerous angles and Gerard Murphy quite easily take care of the ball. Dennis-Sven Söderström struck a weak shot in the 17th minute. Gerard Murphy didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for U21 Brazil. 38 minutes into the match, U21 United States's goalkeeper Gerard Murphy had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Guga Arantes. After having played for 45 minutes, Dennis-Sven Söderström managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. U21 Brazil's supporters crossed their fingers, but Dennis-Sven Söderström was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. With a little luck, U21 United States's Gerard Murphy got control of the ball when Guga Arantes tried to sneak it across the goal line. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

In the 56th match minute, U21 United States was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Claude Park to maneuver through the defense. U21 United States's Erik Medeiros was substituted for Rolland Winters. 59 minutes into the game, U21 Brazil's Dennis-Sven Söderström nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Gerard Murphy made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-0. 61 minutes into the match, U21 United States's goal looked a bit too open when Guga Arantes came free, but Gerard Murphy reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Claude Park during the 62nd minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. Tin Tin took the ball and in the 84 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Rubinho Faustino. Rubinho Faustino dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 3-1. After 92 minutes U21 United States's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Basílio Gomes who took care of the corner kick. A nice corner shot did that Basílio Gomes got away a dangerous shot. Despite this Gerard Murphy quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save.
