Salvador Gaete showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Florin Huțupan in the 29th minute of the match. In the 35th minute, Eusebiu Bratu hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After some careless play in the Romania defense, Carlos Gustavo Blanc kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Remus Blajovan. The Romania fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Remus Blajovan should have stopped the shot. Salvador Gaete made an important save on a dangerous shot by Florin Huțupan in the 40th minute. In the 45th minute, Severiano Manzano ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Remus Blajovan was frozen by the shot and now it was 2-2. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

Salvador Gaete made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Florin Huțupan in the 51st minute of play. Victoro Loayza hit a great freekick 51 minutes into the match. An unexpectedly hard shot by Florin Huțupan in the 53rd minute of play forced Chile's goalkeeper Salvador Gaete to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Salvador Gaete took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Florin Huțupan, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Chile's Salvador Gaete played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Florin Huțupan in the 55th minute of play. In the 56th match minute, Chile was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Higinio Somoza to maneuver through the defense. Higinio Somoza hit a great freekick 58 minutes into the match. In the 58th minute of the match Gary Bale sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Salvador Gaete skillfully saved the ball. Remus Blajovan made an important save on a dangerous shot by Severiano Manzano in the 61st minute. Marin Mihăescu hit a great freekick 63 minutes into the match. Salvador Gaete showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Florin Huțupan in the 70th minute of the match. In the 75th minute the ball was on its way in behind Chile's goalkeeper Salvador Gaete, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Ştefan Suşu sent away a hard shot on goal in the 85th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 91st minute Ştefan Suşu shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Salvador Gaete saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 92 minutes into the match, Romania's goal looked a bit too open when Loreno Matamala came free, but Remus Blajovan reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After some fancy dribbling in the 95th minute, Ştefan Suşu managed to get in a good position for a shot. Romania's supporters rose to their feet, but Ştefan Suşu was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Salvador Gaete breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick.
