Hoàng Tran showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Roy Makaay in the 7th minute of the match. After a rather tough play, Vietnam's Hoàng Phong got a free kick in the 13th minute. In the 14th minute of the match Vedran Ćesić sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Hoàng Tran skillfully saved the ball. Through an outstanding action, after 15 minutes, Hoàng Tran successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. After a defensive mix-up in Vietnam's zone, Tonko Urban stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Hoàng Tran came out of the goal and Tonko Urban tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Roy Makaay's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Hoàng Tran read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 21st minute of play. Hoàng Tran made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Roy Makaay in the 26th minute of play. Hoàng Tran took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Valter Malekin, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Hoàng Tran made a fantastic save in the 30th minute, when Marko Livaja sent off a good shot on target. 32 minutes into the match, Croatia's goal looked a bit too open when Nguyễn Mai came free, but Nebojša Jerić reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 33rd match minute, Vietnam was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Dương Binh to maneuver through the defense. If Tonko Urban had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 34th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Hoàng Tran showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Roy Makaay in the 35th minute of the match. With a little luck, Vietnam's Hoàng Tran got control of the ball when Roy Makaay tried to sneak it across the goal line. Vietnam's Hoàng Tran played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Roy Makaay in the 40th minute of play. Hoàng Phong's late challenge caught a Croatia's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Hoàng Phong helped the player get up and apologised. In the 42nd match minute, Vietnam was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Hoàng Phong to maneuver through the defense. Lê Thuyet kicked well hit freekick during the 45th minute of the match. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 1-0.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Nguyễn Mai made a kick off. Hoàng Tran stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Roy Makaay's shot from short distance in the 59th minute. Hoàng Tran made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Roy Makaay in the 62nd minute of play. In the 63rd minute, Nikola Vlašić hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Croatia's Harry Maguire was substituted for Tonko Urban. Croatia's Silvio Ham was substituted for Nikola Vlašić. Nikola Vlašić kicked well hit freekick during the 64th minute of the match. John Terry kicked well hit freekick during the 65th minute of the match. Croatia's attentive Valter Malekin managed to snatch the ball when Phùng Lan made a throw-in in the 68th minute of the game. Roy Makaay blasted a shot towards the goal in the 70th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Hoàng Tran having to make a save. In the 72nd minute, Roy Makaay left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Croatia fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 2-0. Hoàng Tran made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Roy Makaay in the 78th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Roy Makaay in the 79th minute of play forced Vietnam's goalkeeper Hoàng Tran to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 80 minutes into the match, Roy Makaay had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Hoàng Tran. Vietnam's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Roy Makaay was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 3-0. Hoàng Tran made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Roy Makaay in the 87th minute of play. 90 minutes into the game, Roy Makaay cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 4-0. Hoàng Tran was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. 94 minutes into the match, Roy Makaay had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Hoàng Tran. Vietnam's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Roy Makaay was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 5-0. The referee blew his whistle, and the match came to a close. The players exchanged shirts and headed down the tunnel. The Croatia fans cheered their team off the field, for while Vietnam had put up a good fight, they were unable to come out of the game with any points to show for their effort.
